Door County Folk
Barbara DuFresne has always liked to dance, and from an early age she did - the usual round of tap, ballet and acrobatics. She was first introduced to folk dance at Bloomington (MN) High School by fellow student, Dennis Boxell. Dennis started a folk dance club at the school and it gradually became a performing group as well. Dennis eventually got the group a performance at the St. Paul Festival of Nations.
Life subsequently intervened and dancing diminished for several years. But when she moved to Winona, MN she found an active folk dance group – the Winona International Folk Dancers. Barbara joined this group in 1980 and became its director in1981. For almost 38 years the group’s members have been dancing, teaching and performing. Barbara has taught elementary students, college students, teachers, older adults, and has written narration and choreography for abridged versions of “The Nutcracker”, “Die Fledermaus”, and other incidental performances presented by the Winona Symphony.
